After a shot to superstardom with his band The Jonas Brothers, Nick returned to his first love, the stage: First, in the high-profile anniversary concert staging of Les Miz in London, and now on Broadway, succeeding Daniel Radcliffe and Darren Criss, in the revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. 2. It is estimated that 12 out of every 1,000 U.S. kids have mental retardation.

3. Mental retardation is usually characterized by low mental ability, and limitations in areas like self-direction, school, work, and daily living.

4. Not all disabilities are visible.

5. Around 600 million people in the world are disabled in some way.

6. Down syndrome is the most frequent genetic cause of mild to moderate mental retardation.

7. Down syndrome occurs in one out of every 800 births, in all races and economic groups.

8.Mild mental retardation is much more common than severe mental retardation, accounting for 65 to 75% of all cases with mental retardation.

9. Autism affects 1 in every 150 kids, but no one knows what causes it.

10. Over one million children in the U.S. have hearing loss.

11. There are an estimated 57,696 legally blind people under the age of 21 in the U.S.

In March 2007, almost a year and a half after my diagnosis, I publicly announced that I have diabetes at Carnival For a Cure. I knew I wanted to go public and that seemed like the right time. I guess I wanted to kind of get “comfortable” with my diabetes before telling the world about it.

I found it amazing just how many people know somebody with diabetes or have diabetes themselves. We’d get these stories about how some of the kids were really afraid to tell their friends and how my situation gave them courage to do that. The fact that I’m able to have somewhat of a spotlight to share my story, I just feel blessed. I carry a supply of guitar picks in my pocket, and whenever I meet another “diabetic buddy” as I call them, I give them a pick, a cool little thing.

11 facts about diabetes

1. Type 1 diabetes strikes children suddenly

2. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in childhood and adolescence, but it can develop in adults

3. Up to 3 million Americans may have type 1 diabetes

4. Every day 200 children develop type 1 diabetes – that’s 70,000 children a year

5. Extreme thirst, frequent urination, drowsiness, vision changes, heavy breathing, or unconsciousness are all symptoms of juvenile diabetes

6. More than 15,000 American children are diagnosed with all types of diabetes each year – that’s 40 kids a day

7. Long term symptoms of diabetes could include: kidney failure, nerve damage, heart attack, and stroke

8. People with Juvenile Diabetes must take insulin injections daily or continually get insulin through a pump (like Nick!)

9. Insulin, used to control their blood sugar, was discovered more than 85 years ago and is a proven method of diabetes management. Unfortunately, children in many parts of the world still die because this essential drug is not available to them.

10. Diabetes hits the poorest hardest. In Zambia, a child with type 1 diabetes can expect to live an average of 11 years. In Mali, the same child can expect to live only 30 months. And in Mozambique, the child is likely to die within a year

11. As rates of childhood obesity have risen sharply, so have the rates of type 2 diabetes among children. From 2005 to 2008, type 2 diabetes doubled in American children.
